NEWS RELEASE
July 10, 2014
City of Toronto celebrates one-year countdown to the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games
As the proud Host City of the TORONTO 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games, the City of Toronto, along with TO2015, the provincial and federal governments, and other partners, is excited to mark the one-year countdown to the TORONTO 2015 Games this weekend with a two-day event featuring music, sport and community spirit.
“Toronto is proud to be the Host City of the 2015 Games and this one-year countdown event is just a preview of what the celebrations will be like during the Games,” said Mayor Rob Ford. “The Games are on track to deliver a great legacy of new and improved sport and recreation facilities and community programming in neighbourhoods across Toronto. Now it’s time for everyone to join in the fun, get involved and celebrate the TORONTO 2015 Games.”
Starting today and continuing throughout this weekend’s festivities, residents can check out an exhibition in the City Hall rotunda that outlines the full benefits and legacy of the Games for Toronto. This display details the Host City Showcase Program, a unique initiative featuring 28 innovative projects that will enhance the experience of the Games for residents and visitors while advancing the City’s goals for economic development and tourism, sport development and healthy living, and resident engagement and cultural celebration.
The exhibit also features facility investments and celebration programs that are being funded by the City of Toronto, Province of Ontario, the Government of Canada and other stakeholders and sponsors. Together, these investments will transform the city, help make the TORONTO 2015 Games the best Pan Am Games ever and leave behind an outstanding legacy of benefits for Toronto residents and businesses.
“The TORONTO 2015 Games are going to be a once in a lifetime experience for the City’s residents and visitors next summer,” said Councillor Mark Grimes (Ward 6 Etobicoke-Lakeshore), the City’s Pan Am Games Champion. “The more involved we get, whether by participating in events such as the one-year countdown, volunteering for the Games, buying tickets or inviting friends and family to visit Toronto next summer, the more exciting the Games will be for everyone and the greater the economic benefit they’ll have on Toronto.”
One-year countdown festivities kickoff on Friday, July 11 at 11:45 a.m. with the unveiling of the Cisco TORONTO 2015 Countdown Clock in Nathan Phillips Square. After that, the free two-day festival will fuse sport, music and culture to show residents exactly what the Games will bring to Toronto. The event runs until 11 p.m. on Friday, July 11 and 2 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, ending with a fireworks display.
