The 100th Grey Cup Festival in Toronto in 2012 is:

Expected attendance and economic benefits the 100th Grey Cup festival will bring to Toronto:

  • 11 ticketed events with a possible maximum attendance of 119,000 people
  • Seven FREE events with a possible maximum attendance of 204,000 people
  • Eight hotel properties currently engaged throughout Toronto with more than 2,421 contracted room nights for festival and league operations
  • Estimated operational expenditures of $17 million
  • More than 4,500 accredited festival operations staff/vendor /volunteers
  • The 95th Grey Cup, held in Toronto in 2007, led to a net increase in economic activity for the city of $32.4 million, including $18.1 million in wages and salaries resulting from the event
  • Proceeds from some of the festival’s events will go towards the Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program

The 100th Grey Cup Championship game will be the culmination of an 11-day festival running from November 15 to 25.

More than 300,000 people could be part of 100th Grey Cup Festival

At today’s Economic Development Committee meeting, Chris Rudge, Executive Chairman and CEO of the Toronto Argonauts Football Club, and Chairman of the 100th Grey Cup Festival, outlined the impact of the upcoming 100th Grey Cup Festival on Toronto’s economy.

“It’s going to be a great game and a fantastic celebration,” said Mayor Rob Ford. “Even if you’re not going to the game, there’s a lot to do. The whole country is invited to come celebrate the 100th Grey Cup in Toronto.”

“The 100th Grey Cup festival is a historic national event with significant economic and cultural benefits for the City of Toronto and the Greater Toronto area,” said Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37 Scarborough Centre), Chair of Toronto’s Economic Development Committee.

The 95th Grey Cup, held in Toronto in 2007, led to a net increase in economic activity for the city of $32.4 million, including $18.1 million in wages and salaries resulting from the event. The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance will conduct an economic impact survey for the 100th Grey Cup Festival.

“The 100th Grey Cup and its festival will be much longer in length and larger in scope and footprint than the 95th Grey Cup,” said Rudge. “We are confident that its overall economic impact for Toronto will be significantly greater than what was achieved in 2007.”

The 100th Grey Cup Championship game will be the culmination of an 11-day festival running from November 15 to 25. The festival is an official partner in the City’s annual Cavalcade of Lights celebration, occurring on November 17. Proceeds from some of the festival’s events will go towards the Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program.
