This is an update to my previous blogs:
Since a local grocery store in the Algo Centre Mall was destroyed by the collapse of the mall roof, access to groceries and other basics for Elliott Lake residents has been limited to just one remaining local grocery store.
To help Elliott Lake residents access essential supplies in the community, the Ontario government has signed a Minister’s Zoning Order as an interim measure to:
- allow the speedy set up of the temporary grocery store
- permit the temporary relocation of a grocery store to a local community centre for up to three years
- allow displaced employees to keep their jobs
- provide daily essentials for the community
Please note that a minister’s zoning order is issued under the Planning Act.
- A minister’s zoning order authorizes the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to make orders to control the use of land within Ontario (similar to local zoning by-laws).
