Ontario’s Grocery Gift Card Initiative to Help Canadians Most in Need: Update

Here are the up-to-date results of Ontario’s grocery gift card initiative to help people who had lost food and were unable to replace it without financial assistance.

  • An additional 2,781 families and individuals in 10 communities across southern Ontario received grocery cards to replace the food they lost during the ice storm.
  • More than 12,000 families and individuals received over $1 million worth of grocery cards.
    • The grocery card initiative is now complete in all regions: Dufferin County, Peel Region, Waterloo Region, Wellington County, Halton, Six Nations, Northumberland, Toronto, Hamilton and York Region.
  • All remaining grocery cards are being provided to local food banks for the purchase of high-demand items to help the communities impacted by the ice storm.

Grocery Gift Cards Help Families in Communities Across Ontario

Province and Private Sector Working Together to Help Those Most in Need

This week, an additional 2,781 families and individuals in 10 communities across southern Ontario received grocery cards to replace the food they lost during the ice storm. More than 12,000 families and individuals received over $1 million worth of grocery cards.

The grocery card initiative is now complete in all regions: Dufferin County, Peel Region, Waterloo Region, Wellington County, Halton, Six Nations, Northumberland, Toronto, Hamilton and York Region.

The grocery cards helped people who had lost food and were unable to replace it without financial assistance. All remaining grocery cards are being provided to local food banks for the purchase of high-demand items to help the communities impacted by the ice storm.

This initiative has been made possible through the generosity of Ontario’s corporate sector as well as unions and associations working with the province to quickly deliver food aid to those who most need it, including a major donation of $250,000 to the Canadian Red Cross from the Canadian Tire Family of Companies on behalf of Ontario’s hydro workers, in support of the province’s food support initiative.

Working to help communities recover from the ice storm is part of the government’s plan to work together as One Ontario to build a successful, compassionate and united province where everyone has the opportunity to connect, contribute and enjoy a high quality of life.
