Today, David Schafer is the new fire commissioner of Manitoba, Canada.
Schafer:
- was appointed acting fire commissioner in August 2011
- has 15 years experience with the Office of the Fire Commissioner
- has held a number of posts including acting chief building official, municipal support manager, operations manager and emergency services instructor
As a special operating agency under the Department of Family Services and Labour, the Office of the Fire Commissioner’s duties include:
- fire prevention and investigation
- a broad range of technical safety inspections
- licensing and permit-related services

DAVID SCHAFER NAMED MANITOBA FIRE COMMISSIONER
David Schafer will formally take on the role of Manitoba fire commissioner effective immediately, Family Services and Labour Minister Jennifer Howard, minister responsible for the Office of the Fire Commissioner, announced today.
After an extensive competition, Schafer was selected to continue formally in the role in which he has been serving in an acting status since last summer. He has 15 years experience with the Office of the Fire Commissioner and has held a number of posts including acting chief building official, municipal support manager, operations manager and emergency services instructor. Schafer was appointed acting fire commissioner in August 2011.
The Office of the Fire Commissioner is a special operating agency under the Department of Family Services and Labour with responsibility for fire prevention and investigation, as well as a broad range of technical safety inspections, licensing and permit-related services.
