The Clean Energy Economy is blooming this spring since up to 200 new solar manufacturing jobs are created as Samsung C&T Corp. and SMA Solar Technology AG have partnered to build industrial-size solar inverters at Celestica’s facilities in Toronto.
These exciting solar inverters are electric devices that convert energy produced in solar panels into power that can be used by the electricity grid.
This partnership agreement makes it the third manufacturing deal announced under a $7-billion investment by Samsung in Ontario.
Last year Samsung teamed up with Siemens Canada, Pattern Energy and CS Wind to set up a new wind turbine blade plant in the Tillsonburg area and a wind tower plant in Windsor.
As one of more than 30 solar and wind equipment companies to do business in Ontario, SMA Solar Technology AG will launch its first Canadian-based production of industrial solar inverters to supply Samsung.
These industrial solar inverters will complement SMA’s Ontario-made residential inverters used in smaller solar projects.
Are you impressed that:
- Ontario is Canada’s leader in solar capacity and is home to the world’s largest operational solar photovoltaic farm in Sarnia.
- More than 4,800 small-scale solar projects have been connected in Ontario.
- Ontario’s Long-Term Energy Plan includes increasing the province’s renewable power supply from sources like wind, solar and bio-energy by more than 500 per cent, up to 10,700 megawatts.
Now the term Solar Sarnia is stuck in my green mind.

Ontario’s Economy Turning The Corner

McGuinty Government Helps Create Up To 200 Jobs, Building Clean Energy Economy
Ontario’s economy continues to turn the corner attracting up to 200 new solar manufacturing and related jobs to Toronto as part of a partnership with Samsung that has created 1,800 good jobs for Ontario families.Samsung C&T Corp. and SMA Solar Technology AG have partnered to build industrial-size solar inverters — electric devices that convert energy produced in solar panels into power that can be used by the electricity grid — at Celestica’s facilities in Toronto.
The agreement marks the third manufacturing deal announced under a $7-billion investment by Samsung in Ontario. Last year, Samsung and its partners teamed up with Siemens Canada, Pattern Energy and CS Wind to set up a new wind turbine blade plant in the Tillsonburg area and a wind tower plant in Windsor.
A world leader in the industry, SMA Solar Technology AG is one of more than 30 solar and wind equipment companies that have announced plans to set up or expand operations in Ontario since the Green Energy Act was launched in 2009. To supply Samsung, SMA Solar Technology AG will launch its first Canadian-based production of industrial solar inverters. These will complement SMA’s Ontario-made residential inverters used in smaller solar projects.
Ontario’s Long-Term Energy Plan is getting Ontario off dirty coal-fired power and replacing it with clean, renewable sources of power — like wind, solar and bio-energy. This transition to a clean, modern and reliable electricity system is creating thousands of new, good jobs and keeping the lights on in our homes and businesses.
To help Ontarians manage the costs of turning on more clean power, the McGuinty government is:
- Taking 10 per cent off electricity bills for families, farms and businesses over the next five years with the new Ontario Clean Energy Benefit. As a result, electricity bills have remained stable over the last year.
- Starting May 1, Time-of-Use off-peak periods are moving from 9 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, providing an extra 10 hours of electricity every week at the lowest available rate.

– Kathleen Wynne
MPP for Don Valley West
“Canada is a very important market for Samsung and we support the province’s commitment to green energy and related industries. We are pleased to have reached an agreement with SMA to build solar inverters to serve the growing solar power generation market in Ontario, Canada and North America. This achievement is one of many significant milestones resulting from the historic Green Energy Investment Agreement between the Korean Consortium and the province of Ontario – an agreement that will create jobs and clean energy for generations to come.”
– Cheol-Woo Lee
Senior Executive Vice President, Samsung C&T Corp.
“Ontario is a major solar power market for SMA and we are pleased to reach this milestone agreement with Samsung. Ontario’s Green Energy Act and the Feed-In Tariff program have created a welcoming business climate for manufacturers looking to expand their market reach.”
– Günther Cramer
CEO, SMA Solar Technology AG
