Health Hazard Update: Second List of Recalled Kirkland Signature Brand Lean Ground Beef

This is an update to a previous blog, Health Hazard Alert: Recalled Kirkland Signature Brand Organic Lean Ground Beef, Product of USA.

Regarding the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) ongoing food safety investigation, the voluntary recall update now includes a second list of the following additional product.

The retailer, Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), is warning the public not to consume the Kirkland Signature brand Lean Ground Beef described below because it may be contaminated with pathogenic E. coli bacteria.

Recall Classification is Class 2.
- Class 2 is a situation in which the use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
This product has been sold from the Costco warehouse in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.

Ottawa, October 16, 2013 – The public warning issued on October 11th, 2013 has been updated to include an additional product which was sold at only one Costco store location.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. are warning the public not to consume the Kirkland Signature brand Lean Ground Beef described below because it may be contaminated with pathogenic E. coli bacteria.

This product has been sold from the Costco warehouse in Lethbridge, Alberta.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The retailer, Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd., Ottawa, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

Food contaminated with pathogenic E. coli may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria my cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

Ottawa, le 16 octobre 2013 – La portée de la mise en garde du 11 octobre 2013 a été mise à jour afin d’inclure un produit supplémentaire qui a été vendu dans un seul entrepôt Costco.

L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) et Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. avisent la population de ne pas consommer le boeuf haché maigre de marque Kirkland Signature décrit ci après, car il pourrait être contaminé par la bactérie pathogène E. coli.

Ce produit a été vendu dans l’entrepôt Costco à Lethbridge (Alberta).

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ce produit n’a été signalé.

Le détaillant, Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd., situé à Ottawa (Ontario), retire volontairement du marché le produit visé. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.

Les aliments contaminés par la bactérie pathogène E. coli ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut occasionner des maladies graves, voire mortelles, qui se manifestent notamment par des douleurs abdominales intenses et de la diarrhée sanguine. Certaines personnes peuvent avoir des convulsions ou des accidents vasculaires cérébraux, d’autres peuvent avoir besoin de transfusions sanguines et de dialyse. Dans certains cas, les dommages causés aux reins sont permanents. Dans les cas graves, la contamination par E. coli peut causer la mort.
