Certain VEGGIE PATCH brand ULTIMATE MEATLESS BURGER may contain Listeria monocytogenes
OTTAWA, November 30, 2012 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Costco Wholesale Canada Inc. are warning the public not to consume the Veggie Patch brand The Ultimate Meatless Burger described below because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The affected product, Veggie Patch brand The Ultimate Meatless Burger, was produced in the United States of America and imported into Canada. This product was sold refrigerated in 1.02 kg tray, bearing UPC 6 10129 08477 7. The two Best Before dates affected by this alert are Jan/12/2013 and Jan/17/2013.
This product has been distributed in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
The importer, Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd., Ottawa, ON, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 30 novembre 2012 – L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) et Costco Wholesale Canada Inc. avisent la population de ne pas consommer le produit « le burger sans-viande ultime » de marque Veggie Patch décrit ci-dessous. En effet, ce produit pourrait être contaminé par la bactérie Listeria monocytogenes.
Le produit visé, le « burger sans-viande ultime » de marque Veggie Patch, a été fabriqué aux États-Unis et importé au Canada. Ce produit a été vendu réfrigéré en barquettes de 1,02 kg portant le CUP 6 10129 08477 7. Les deux dates « Meilleur avant » visées par cette mise en garde sont « Jan/12/2013 » et « Jan/17/2013 ».
Le produit a été distribué au Nouveau-Brunswick, à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, en Nouvelle-Écosse, en Ontario et au Québec.
Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ce produit n’a été signalé.
Les aliments contaminés par Listeria monocytogenes ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la listériose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire qui peut entraîner une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, une raideur de la nuque et des nausées. Les femmes enceintes, les gens âgés et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli sont particulièrement vulnérables. Dans le cas de la femme enceinte, l’infection peut n’occasionner que de légers troubles pseudo-grippaux, mais l’enfant qu’elle porte risque d’être infecté, de naître prématurément ou de mourir avant la naissance.
L’importateur, Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd., situé à Ottawa (Ontario), retire volontairement du marché le produit visé. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
