NEWS RELEASE

July 2, 2015

Come celebrate the Pan Am flame in Toronto on July 4 and 5

The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay will arrive in Toronto this Saturday, and to welcome the Pan Am flame, the City of Toronto is holding two community celebrations this weekend. Toronto will host the Pan Am Games Torch Relay from July 4 to 10 in the final leg of the relay before its final stop at the Opening Ceremony for the Pan Am Games on July 10.

The first event will be held this Saturday, July 4 at the Prince Edward Viaduct (Bloor Viaduct), from 5 to 11 p.m. This event will also include a dynamic lighting display of the Luminous Veil.  Following the event, the Luminous Veil will continue to be lit to serve as a legacy of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games and become a work of public art for the city for years to come.

The community celebration promises to be memorable, showcasing performances by local, national and international musicians and performers. Highlights of the event include performances by Lisa Odjig, Kobo Town, Maracatu Mar Aberto, Clay & Paper Theatre, Amélie et Les Singes Bleus and DJ Linterna.

The Pam Am flame will arrive at 7 p.m. to light the community cauldron. Official speaking remarks from TO2015, government and torch relay partners will be held shortly after the arrival of the flame. The lighting of the Luminous Veil will take place at 10 p.m.

There will be a special announcement at midnight tomorrow to reveal the headline act for the Prince Edward Viaduct community celebration.

The second community celebration will be held on Sunday, July 5 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, which will be known as the CIBC Toronto Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House during the Games. This daytime event will start at noon and finish at 4 p.m., and will include performances by Lisa Odjig, Maestro Fresh Wes and Henry Flow. Residents and visitors will also have the opportunity to work with Mural Routes artists to create a live art mural to express what the Pan Am Games means to them.

The Pan Am flame will arrive at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre at approximately 2:45 p.m. and official speaking remarks will follow.

The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre is located at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, 875 Morningside Ave.

All community celebrations are free, accessible and family-oriented, and will include sport activities for all ages, sponsor activations and food trucks.

The Prince Edward Viaduct and Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre celebrations are part of the City’s five community celebrations for the Pan Am Games Torch Relay.
