PhotoSensitive, started in Toronto in 1990, is a non-profit collective of professional photographers who use their photography talents, skills and styles to achieve social goals; and together create a compelling social comment on a subject.
The founders of Photosensitive are Toronto Star photographer Andrew Stawicki and former Star graphics editor Peter Robertson.
“Today PhotoSensitive is branching out to include the talents of photographers from across Canada and seeks to photograph issues that affect our social well-being.”
Photosensitive has created a great photographic masterpiece of 1,000 images of people from across Canada titled Cancer Connections: Images of Hope and Courage From Across Canada.
Also, Cancer Connections contains “personal stories and testimonials of incredible strength, courage, and determination.”
This unique, compelling book of Photosensitive is due to launch on April 12, published by John Wiley and Sons.
Here are the details of the book Cancer Connections: Images of Hope and Courage From Across Canada, and its launch.
“In partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, PhotoSensitive will be holding simultaneous launch parties on April 12 in every city visited by the travelling PhotoSensitive exhibition between May 2008 and June 2010. This national event will help to launch a book that is over three years in the making.
The book contains 1,000 stunning black and white images, with 150 photos featured in large format alongside their captions. There are also 12 in-depth interviews with a variety of Cancer Connections subjects from across the country.
The book will launch in the gallery at First Canadian Place, Toronto at 6pm on the evening of April 12 and there will also be launch parties at the following cities:
- Vancouver, British Columbia
- Calgary, Alberta
- Regina, Saskatchewan
- Winnipeg, Manitoba
- Ottawa, Ontario
- Montreal, Quebec
- Halifax, Nova Scotia
- Saint John, New Brunswick
- Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
- St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador
We plan to have photographers and subjects from the show at each of the launch events. There will be speakers and also video from the Cancer Connections exhibition as it appeared in every city. Please email james@photosensitive.com if you would like to get involved in the launch events.
The book will retail at $39.95 Canadian plus tax (a bargain for this quality of hardback pictorial book) BUT PhotoSensitive has a limited number of books that we can offer at cost – $25, no tax, plus shipping where applicable (no shipping will apply if you can pick the books up from the Toronto book launch or PhotoSensitive’s Mississauga office).
You can see the online gallery of Cancer Connections photos at www.photosensitive.com/cc and books can be pre-ordered by emailing james@photosensitive.com.”
Please note that the book’s launch will coincide with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Month.
Also, it is available for pre-order at cost.
