The chip truck, sponsored by PetSecure, is a low-cost, mobile microchip clinic for dogs and cat owners. The chip truck offers a microchip and a pet licence for only $25 for cats and $35 for dogs. If your pet has a current City of Toronto licence, the cost of your microchip is $10 with proof of licence. Appointments are not required.
A microchip is a tiny device – the size of a grain of rice – implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades. It uses passive radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. It is a simple procedure with no anesthetic required. Registered microchips give owners the best chance of finding their pet if it runs away or gets lost – a unique identifier number linked directly to the owner appears when the microchip is scanned.
At the chip truck, animals are microchipped by an Animal Services veterinarian. The vet injects the chip using a syringe and records a unique identification. A test scan ensures the chip is operating correctly.
Animal shelter staff, animal care and control officers and veterinarians routinely look for microchips to return lost pets quickly to their owners. Toronto Animal Services’ vets place microchips in all cats, dogs and rabbits that are adopted through the City’s shelters.
To use the chip truck, dogs must be on a leash and cats must be properly contained in a carrier. Pet owners are asked to bring a piece of photo identification with their address.
