DISCOVER THE HILL INTERPRETATION PROGRAM — ON UNTIL MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2013

  • The Discover the Hill outdoor interpretation program is an excellent complement to the Centre Block tour which continues all year long.
  • The public is invited to gain a better appreciation of the importance of Parliament Hill via the following activites.
    • Visiting the Parliament Hill Visitor Welcome Centre.
    • Enjoying a tour using the FREE Discover the Hill Outdoor Self-Guiding Booklet
    • Walking “In the Footsteps of Great Canadians” during a FREE 45-minute guided tour of the grounds.
    • Downloading the Capital tours application to discover the people, traditions and secrets of Parliament Hill.

INTERPRETATION OF THE NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL — ON UNTIL MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2013

  • Confederation Square, Ottawa, is Canada’s place of remembrance.
    • The monuments found there include the National War Memorial, The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier and the Valiants Memorial.
  • Visitors can learn more about the history, symbolism and importance of these monuments by speaking and sharing stories with the National Capital Commission (NCC) interpreters stationed at Confederation Square daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

City of Toronto’s Recreational Activities on Labour Day

The City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation division will offer many leisure activities on the Labour Day holiday on Monday, September 2.

Here are the activities and facilities that are opened on Labour Day.

  • Unsupervised splash pads will be opened and will remain opened until September 22.
    • Parents and caregivers are reminded to supervise their child/children at all times.
  • Weather permitting, all of Toronto’s mainland beaches – 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. – and the Toronto Island beaches – 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
    • All locations will have lifeguard supervision during the hours of operation.
  • All five City golf courses – 6:30 a.m. (first tee off) to 6:30 p.m. (last nine-hole tee off).
  • Toronto Island will offer many activities on Labour Day.
    • Residents can walk, roll, cycle, explore, rent a rowboat; tour in a tram, visit the Ned Hanlan statue and haunted Gibraltar Lighthouse, play Frisbee golf, cool off at a splash pad, view the city skyline and visit Franklin Children’s garden just steps from the animals at Far Enough Farm and Centreville Amusement Park.
    • Toronto Island ferries will run on a holiday summer schedule up to and including Monday, September 2.

  • High Park and High Park Zoo.
    • Babies at the zoo include a yak, capybara, wallaby and bison. You can also meeet the new emu. The llama pen will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    • The scenic, trackless train ride through the park will be running.
    • Tickets can be purchased from the train operator.
  • Toronto’s parks and green spaces provides unsupervised leisure activities.
    • Consider taking a walking tour of your park.

Here are the activities and facilities that are closed on Labour Day.

  • All other Parks, Forestry and Recreation facilities, including recreation centres.
    • Regular programs and services will resume on Tuesday, September 3.
  • All indoor pools, outdoor pools (with the exception of Donald D. Summerville Outdoor Pool) and wading pools.
    • Sunday, September 1 is the last day of summer operation for the City’s outdoor pools and wading pools.
    • Indoor pools will re-open on Tuesday, September 3.

    The outdoor walk will mostly be on paved pathways.

Outside the Box Art Project to Improve the Look of Toronto’s Street Infrastructure

  • The City of Toronto is introducing a program called Outside the Box that will beautify traffic signal boxes while exploring techniques to reduce the impact of graffiti vandalism.
  • The program will consist of two parts: hand-painted art projects on traffic signal boxes and wrapping of traffic signal boxes with a graphic, printed, anti-graffiti coating or wrap.
  • Hand-Painted Art Projects
    • StreetARToronto (StART), a City initiative, issued a call for submissions for local artists to hand paint traffic signal boxes.
    • A jury selected 11 artists to paint 20 boxes in various locations across Toronto.
    • The successful proposals are innovative in design, foster community pride, counteract graffiti vandalism by using all of the box’s surface area, and contribute to a sense of identity for residents.
    • Painting is taking place between August 27 and October 25.
  • Wrap projects
    • In addition, two images have been selected to be printed onto the wraps.
    • Gary Taxali, one of Canada’s leading graphic designers, has designed a specific print for the boxes, and a photographic image by the late Moira McElhinney will be used for the second wrap.
      • Taxali is an award-winning, Toronto-based illustrator whose work has appeared in galleries and museums throughout North America and Europe.
      • In addition to his gallery shows and illustration work, Taxali serves on the Stamp Advisory Committee for Canada Post.
      • In 2012, the Royal Canadian Mint released a special edition of six Gary Taxali 25-cent coins.
    • The late Moira McElhinney, a native Torontonian who studied photography at Ryerson University, had a “finely-tuned sensibility for composition, form and colour.
      • Her work reflected her fascination with the beauty of the everyday world.”

Partial Closure of Intersection of Kingston Road and Woodbine Avenue This Weekend

  • The intersection of Kingston Road and Woodbine Avenue will be partially closed to traffic from Friday, August 30 at 10 a.m. to Tuesday, September 3 at 5 a.m. for streetcar track construction.
  • Traffic travelling northbound on Woodbine Avenue will be diverted eastbound along Kingston Road, while traffic travelling southbound on Woodbine Avenue will exit before reaching Kingston Road.
  • Westbound Kingston Road is currently closed to traffic for ongoing construction work in this area.
  • Traffic travelling eastbound on Kingston Road will be maintained for the duration of the closure.
  • Motorists in the area could use Coxwell Avenue and Victoria Park Avenue as alternative routes.

TTC Alerts

TTC’s Pape Station Re-Opens Tomorrow, Aug. 31, at 6 a.m.

  • TTC Chief Executive Officer Andy Byford will greet customers at Pape Station on Tuesday, September 3, from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
  • During the closure, floors, stairs, finishes, ceilings and the new bus waiting area were worked on.
    • Elevators, bike parking and landscaping will be fully completed in October.
    • By December, the second exit will be completed.
