According to the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS):

  • The number of women-run businesses continues to grow in Canada as women are starting companies at double the national average rate

    • In Canada, 4 out of 5 businesses are started by women

    • Women business owners generate almost 40% of their sales in foreign markets and provide jobs for 1.7 million Canadians

  • About 950,000 Canadian women were self-employed in 2011, according to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey

    • Between 2001 and 2011, the number of self-employed women climbed by 23 per cent, while the number of men grew by 14 per cent

  • Forty-seven per cent of small and medium-sized enterprises were entirely or partially owned by women in 2012, according to TD Economics

    • The report also found that women tended to stay in business longer than men and are more likely to plan to expand their companies

Gaining Momentum: Women and Technology event

Councillor Mary Fragedakis (Ward 29 Toronto-Danforth) will be joined by the Honourable Laurel Broten, the Ontario Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, at a City of Toronto business event inspired by International Women’s Day.

This event celebrates the accomplishments of local women entrepreneurs while addressing key business challenges faced by this segment of the business community.

A keynote speech by MaRS Discovery District CEO Dr. Ilse Treurnicht will be followed by a panel discussion led by Enterprise Toronto. The panel of entrepreneurs includes Leila Boujnane (Idee Inc.), Marty Britton (Britton Management Profiles), Pearl Chen (Karma Laboratory) and Heather Payne (Ladies Learning Code).

This event is hosted by the City of Toronto’s Enterprise Toronto and MaRS Discovery District with support from the Company of Women, the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment, and the Ministry of Research and Innovation.
