These recalls of peanut butter products in Canada are part of an ongoing food safety investigation which is related to the expanding peanut butter product recall in the USA by Sunland Inc. due to possible Salmonella Bredeney contamination:
- The above CFIA Public Advisories that were dated before October 16, 2012, did not specifically identified and/or named Sunland Inc as the original source of the peanuts or peanut butter that may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria

- This updated CFIA advisory below adds the following product to all the above lists of recalled food products containing peanuts or peanut butter:
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume, sell or serve the following food product which is recalled in the USA by Sunland Inc., because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria:

- However, there are confirmed Salmonella Bredeney illnesses in multiple states in the United States
- The importers and retailers are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace
- Recall Classification: Class II
- is a situation in which the use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote

OTTAWA, October 19, 2012 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume, sell or serve the food product described below because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.
These recalls are part of an ongoing food safety investigation. This recall of peanut butter products in Canada is related to the expanding peanut butter product recall in the USA by Sunland Inc. due to possible Salmonella Bredeney contamination.
The following product is affected by this alert:

There have been no illnesses reported in Canada associated with the consumption of these peanut butter products. However, there are confirmed Salmonella Bredeney illnesses in multiple states in the United States.
Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
The importers and retailers are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

OTTAWA, le 19 octobre 2012 – L’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) avise la population de ne pas consommer, vendre ou servir le produit alimentaire décrit ci-dessous. En effet, le produit visé pourrait être contaminé par la bactérie Salmonella.
Ces rappels font partie d’une enquête en cours sur la salubrité des aliments. Ces rappels de produits de beurre d’arachides sont liés à un rappel élargi de produits de beurre d’arachides aux États-Unis par l’entreprise Sunland Inc. en raison d’une contamination possible par la bactérie Salmonella Bredeney.
Le produit suivant est visé par la présente mise en garde.

Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits de beurre d’arachides n’a été signalé au Canada. Cependant, des cas confirmés de maladie associés à la bactérie Salmonella Bradeney ont été enregistrés dans plusieurs États des États-Unis.
Les aliments contaminés par la bactérie Salmonella ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la salmonellose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire. Chez les jeunes enfants, les gens âgés et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli, la salmonellose peut causer des infections graves, parfois mortelles. Chez les personnes en bonne santé, la salmonellose peut se manifester par des symptômes de courte durée comme une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, des vomissements, des nausées, des douleurs abdominales et de la diarrhée. La salmonellose peut entraîner des complications à long terme comme une forme grave d’arthrite.
Les importateurs et les détaillants retirent volontairement du marché les produits visés. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité du rappel.
