This is an update to my previous blogs:
Effective immediately, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment in Canada has lifted the Smog Advisory (June 28, 2012) for the following forecast regions because increasing wind speeds are allowing for good mixing and dispersion of pollutants, resulting in cleaner air:
- Barrie-Orillia-Midland
- Belleville-Quinte-Northumberland
- City of Toronto
- Dufferin-Innisfil
- Grey-Bruce
- Halton-Peel
- Peterborough-Kawartha Lakes
- Waterloo-Wellington
- York-Durham
However, a Smog Advisory remains in effect for:
- City of Hamilton
- Dunnville-Caledonia-Haldimand
- Elgin
- Huron-Perth
- London-Middlesex
- Niagara
- Oxford-Brant
- Sarnia-Lambton
- Simcoe-Delhi-Norfolk
- Windsor-Essex-Chatham-Kent
Hot, sunny conditions, combined with a westerly flow of polluted air from the U.S. and local build-up of pollutants are resulting in elevated smog levels across parts of southern Ontario.
This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
The details of the smog and air quality indices forecasts (issued on Friday, June 29, 2012) for these affected regions are as follows:
- June 29, Friday afternoon update:
- Increasing westerly winds are allowing for good mixing and dispersion of pollutants across northern, eastern, and parts of southern Ontario
- And as a result, the smog advisory has been partially lifted
- A smog advisory continues to be in effect across the remainder of southern Ontario.
- A weak high pressure ridge over the Great Lakes region is forecasted to cause mostly sunny skies over most of the forecast regions:
- Very warm temperatures are forecasted to continue with lower humidity and westerly winds
- Air quality indices are forecasted to:
- increase to the poor category in the smog advisory regions on Friday, mostly due to ozone
- be in the good to moderate categories elsewhere
- During Saturday, June 30:
- Very warm temperatures are forecasted to continue with partly or mostly sunny skies during the morning and west to southwesterly winds ahead of a weak cold front.
- The front is forecasted to move eastward over northern and southern Ontario during the afternoon, followed by winds veering to northwesterly.
- Similarly, air quality indices are forecasted to:
- increase to the poor category in the smog advisory regions, mostly due to ozone
- be in the good to moderate categories elsewhere
- During Sunday, July 1:
- a high pressure ridge is forecasted to lie over southern Ontario, resulting in mostly sunny skies and light winds.
- Similarly, air quality indices are forecasted to:
- increase to the poor category in the smog advisory regions, mostly due to ozone
- be in the good to moderate categories elsewhere
