This is an update to my previous blog Smog Alert: Southern Ontario and Parts of Central Ontario June 9-10, 2012.
Effective immediately, the Ministry of the Environment has lifted its Smog Advisory for the following forecast regions:
- Grey-Bruce
- Huron-Perth
- London-Middlesex
- Sarnia-Lambton
- Windsor-Essex-Chatham-Kent
A Smog Advisory remains in effect for:
- Barrie-Orillia-Midland
- City of Hamilton
- City of Toronto
- Dufferin-Innisfil
- Dunnville-Caledonia-Haldimand
- Elgin
- Halton-Peel
- Niagara
- Oxford-Brant
- Parry Sound-Muskoka-Huntsville
- Simcoe-Delhi-Norfolk
- Waterloo-Wellington
- York-Durham
Hot, hazy and humid conditions combined with southerly winds blowing air pollution from the U.S. into Ontario is resulting in high smog levels in the remaining air quality forecast regions.
This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
The details of the smog forecast for these affected regions are as follows:
- During Monday, June 11:
- A high pressure ridge east of Ontario and a cold front west of the Great Lakes are causing a continuing southerly flow of very warm and humid air over southern Ontario
- A weather disturbance moving northward toward Ontario is causing cloudiness to spread northward over southern Ontario with precipitation expected overnight
- Air quality indices are forecasted to be in the
- moderate to poor categories in the smog advisory regions, due to ozone and fine particles
- good to moderate categories elsewhere during Monday afternoon
- During Tuesday, June 12:
- The cold front is forecasted to move eastward over southern Ontario
- Cloudiness and precipitation are expected over most regions
- Except for clearing skies over northern regions following passage of the front
- Winds are forecasted to be south to southwesterly ahead of the front and west to northwesterly following the front
- Air quality indices are forecasted to be in the
- good to moderate categories in southern and eastern regions and
- generally, good category elsewhere
- During Wednesday, June 13:
- A high pressure ridge is forecasted to be over the Great Lakes region
- Sunny skies are forecasted with seasonable temperatures
- Winds are forecasteded to be north to northwesterly over most regions except west to southwesterly over the northern regions.
- Air quality indices are forecasted to be in the
- good to moderate categories in southwestern Ontario
- generally, in the good category elsewhere
