Do not serve or consume certain River Ranch brand and Sysco Natural brand salad products described in the Public Advisory table below because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recalls as it warns:
- the public
- importers
- distributors
- retailers
- and food service establishments such as
- hotels
- restaurants
- cafeterias
- hospitals
- and nursing homes
The details regarding the importers’ voluntary recall of the affected River Ranch brand and Sysco Natural brand salad products from the marketplace are as follows:
- This is a part of the larger recall of retail and foodservice salads initiated by River Ranch Fresh Foods, LLC, California, USA with distribution in Canada.
- The smaller size retail packages of salads have Best Before dates between 12MAY 2012 – 22MAY 2012.
- The larger size packages of salads sold to foodservicehave Julian dates between 116 – 125.
- The code date is typically located in the upper right hand corner of the packages.
- These products may have been distributed nationally.
- There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
- The importers of both River Ranch brand and Sysco Natural brand salad products are:

OTTAWA, May 19, 2012 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public as well as various importers, distributors, retailers and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeteria, hospitals and nursing homes not to serve or consume various salads described below because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
The importers listed below are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recalls.

Le code dateur se trouve habituellement dans le coin supérieur droit de l’emballage.
Ces produits pourraient avoir été distribués à l’échelle nationale.
Aucun cas de maladie associé à la consommation de ces produits n=a été signalé.
Les aliments contaminés par la bactérie Listeria monocytogenes ne présentent pas nécessairement d’altération visible ni d’odeur suspecte. La consommation d’aliments contaminés par cette bactérie peut causer la listériose, une maladie d’origine alimentaire qui peut entraîner une forte fièvre, des maux de tête violents, une raideur de la nuque et des nausées. Les femmes enceintes, les personnes âgées et les personnes dont le système immunitaire est affaibli sont particulièrement vulnérables. Dans le cas de la femme enceinte, l’infection peut n’occasionner que de légers troubles pseudo-grippaux, mais l’enfant qu’elle porte risque d’être infecté, de naître prématurément ou de mourir avant la naissance.
Les importateurs suivants retirent volontairement du marché les produits visés. L’ACIA surveille l’efficacité des rappels.
