Scarborough Festival Celebrating Youth

This Saturday, May 12, features a day-long Scarborough festival celebrating youth dedication, passion, leadership skills and contributions to the community.
City’s partners for this Scarborough festival are:
- City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation division
- Centennial College Alumnae
- Building It to Suit Youth (BITSY)
- HMV
- Loblaw’s Super Store
- McDonalds
- Bulk Barn
- and the Scarborough Hockey Association
The highlights of the Scarborough Festival Celebrating Youth include:
- entertainment by break dancers,
- spoken word artists
- and musicians
- this event will be held rain or shine
- Parks, Forestry and Recreation will offer information about youth-oriented programs, including:
- dance
- and karate
- There will be demonstrations by:
- the Toronto Lacrosse Club
- and the Air Cadets
- and information tables with representatives of:
- Youth Link
- Public Health
National Emergency Preparedness Week:- May 6 to 12 is Emergency Preparedness week which
is a national event coordinated by Public Safety Canada in collaboration with provincial and territorial governments and other partners, encouraging Canadians to be ready to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency - The Durham Emergency Management Office (DEMO) invites members of the public to visit their display, from May 6 to 12, in the Upper Galleria of The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters, located at 605 Rossland Rd. E. in Whitby. The display will provide residents with information about personal emergency preparedness.
- Londoners are invited to tour London’s Emergency Operations Centre, check out emergency vehicles and displays and learn how to prepare a 72 hour kit:

On May 1st, 2011, about15,000 runners and walkers took over Toronto’s Yonge Street to help make a difference in lives of children with cancer:
- The Sporting Life 10K is a 10 kilometre race that has become Toronto’s largest single distance run in support of Camp Oochigeas – a Camp for children with cancer as shown in this video:

The City of Toronto announced the following Sporting Life 10K Run’s road closures for Sunday, May 13:

- Yonge Street between Lawrence Avenue and Eglinton Avenue will be closed from 5 to 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 13 to accommodate the formation area for the run.
- Along the route for the run, closures will occur between 8 and 11:30 a.m. at the following locations:
- Yonge Street between Eglinton Avenue and Richmond Street
- Richmond Street from Yonge Street to Peter Street
- Peter Street/Blue Jays Way between Richmond Street and Front Street
- Westbound Front Street between Blue Jays Way and Bathurst Street
- Bathurst Street from Front Street to Fort York Boulevard
- Fort York Boulevard from Bathurst Street to Fleet Street
- In addition, the following closures related to the run will be in effect between 5 and 11:30 a.m. Sunday on the following streets:
- Fort York Boulevard between Fleet Street and Lake Shore Boulevard (north and eastbound curb lanes will remain open for condominium access)
- Bathurst Street from Fort York Boulevard to Fleet Street
- The eastbound lanes of Fleet Street – closed from Strachan Avenue to Fort York Boulevard
- After all runners pass an intersection, that intersection will reopen to traffic.
- The run’s finish area, on Fort York Boulevard from the west side of Bathurst Street to Fleet Street, will be closed from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.
