This week is Canada Water Week! And this video explains the 2012 theme of Canada Water Week:
Canada Water Week is a week-long celebration of water from coast-to-coast-to-coast, held annually in the third week of March to coincide with World Water Day on March 22.
World Water Day is an international day to:
- celebrate freshwater
- focus attention on the importance of freshwater
- advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
For Canada Water Week, this year’s theme is “Discover Your Water Footprint” which is the amount of fresh water used directly and indirectly in one’s daily activities – water used for drinking, cooking and washing, as well as the water used to produce food, paper and other materials.
During Canada Water Week, Canadians:
- can learn more about how they should use this vital resource
- are encouraged to consider their own “water footprint”
- The average Canadian has a water footprint of 6392 litres/day.
- Annually, Canadians’ collective water footprint is roughly equal the volume of water that flows over Niagara Falls every year!
- participate in community events that draw attention to local water issues
- celebrate the freshwater connection we all share
The objective of Canada Water Week is to “elevate the profile and understanding of water across Canada “through a series of public events and activities coordinated under the banner of Celebrating and Conserving Water across Our Country.”

- or see The Water Brothers live at the Green Living Show in Toronto for Eco Youth Day on April 13

Upcoming Events for World Water Day Highlight Local and Global Water Issues
March 22, 2012 is International World Water Day, which is recognized annually as a way to increase public awareness of important global freshwater issues. Events are held around the world on this day and in 2012, the City of Charlottetown will be hosting two free community events.
“This is the second year for the City of Charlottetown to be involved in this important day of awareness,” says Mayor Clifford Lee, “Preserving fresh water is an important concern on the local, national and global scale and these events are great ways to learn more.”
Children and teens from Murphy’s Community Centre and the Confederation Centre Arts Classes had the opportunity to learn about local water supply concerns and then create artwork inspired by water. This artwork will be on display for the week of March 19-23 at the concourse at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Bring a friend or your family and see water from the perspective of Charlottetown’s youngest citizens.
On the evening of March 22 there will be a screening of the documentary Flow at City Cinema, 64 King Street. Charlottetown. The show begins at 9:00pm and is free to attend. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Flow is an award-winning documentary that examines some of the most pressing global water issues of our time.
“World Water Day is an occasion to think about how lucky we are to have access to clean and reliable drinking water,” says Councillor Edward Rice, Chair of the Water & Sewer Utility Committee. “It is also the time to think about how we can make important choices that ensures this access continues.”
