With Phase 1: The Green Fleet Transition Plan 2004-2007, Toronto in Ontario, Canada, has been greening its fleet using innovative vehicles, fuels and practices.
The green goal is the reduction of:
- fuel use,
- fuel costs, and
- emissions of greenhouse gases and smog pollutants.
Greening the fleet means choosing more environmentally sustainable vehicles, fuels and activities for the City’s use.
The Green Fleet Plan 2008-2011 was adopted by Council in early March 2008. The following actions are now City of Toronto policy.
- ensure Fleet Services Division operations meet or surpass the emission reduction targets adopted by the City;
- reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions from the 1990 levels of 6% by 2012 (the “Kyoto target”); 30% by 2020; and 80% by 2050; and
- a 20% reduction target for locally generated smog causing pollutants from 2004 levels by 2012.
The Green Fleet Plan 2008-2011 will make buying green vehicles standard practice for the City’s centrally-managed fleet of almost 4,700 vehicles and pieces of equipment, with a focus on green heavy trucks.
These fleet vehicles and fuels are used by all City Divisions and managed by Fleet Services.
And the tremendous green benefits are as follows:
- Via the Green Fleet Transition Plan 2004-2007, the City of Toronto reduced CO2 emissions by an estimated five million kilograms, (5,000 tonnes).
- Over 2008-2011, the City of Toronto is aiming to reduce emissions of CO2 by approximately 15 million kilograms (15,000 tonnes) compared to conventional vehicles, fuels and activities.
- This equals an 11% reduction in fleet emissions compared to conventional activities.
- By reducing fuel use, implementing the Green Fleet Plan 2008-2011 will also save money.
Thus, the Green Fleet Expo (GFX) 2011 is an important event for Toronto, Hamilton and the rest of Ontario as it showcases green vehicles and technologies at their best.

Toronto, Hamilton, Province of Ontario and Fleet Challenge Ontario host the sixth annual Green Fleet Expo (GFX)
It’s another year to showcase groundbreaking green vehicles and technologies at their best. The cities of Toronto and Hamilton, the Ministry of Transportation, and Fleet Challenge Ontario come together to host the sixth annual Green Fleet Expo (GFX).
Fleet managers from across North America will gather to discuss green fleets, participate in discussions with green vehicle manufacturers, check out the displays of transportation industry exhibitors and test drive a selection of green vehicles during this two-day expo.
Representatives from the City of Hamilton will officially open GFX 2011. Carol Layton, Deputy Minister of Transportation will lead the panel of Province of Ontario senior officials discussing their support for green fleets on day one. The popular ride-and-drive opportunity, allowing participants to test drive the latest electric vehicle technology, takes place on day two.
