Kuumba Festival was mostly a free event in February to celebrate Black History Month.

Kuumba at Harbourfront Centre was the venue commemorating black history, arts and cultural events. Black in History, witnessed the historical footprints in time by the Indigenous Black Canadian and American experience. Four historical displays were featured: Motown Museum, Voices from the Days of Slavery, On the Road North: Black Canada and the Journey to Freedom and Enslaved Africans in Upper Canada.
The Jaivah Nouvel Expose Dance Troupe showed traditional and contemporary dance from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Congo, Southern Africa and Egypt.
The memory of Miss Lou was honoured with an afternoon of storytelling. Children listened to a poem and created their own portraits with crayons.
Vendors provided a wide variety of items for sale at very attractive prices.
A performance by Jamesking featured melodic and lyrical fusion of pop, rock and neo-soul.
A festival of a variety of short films and special screenings of films were followed by panel discussions.
Cadence Dance Academy offered lessons, performances and choreography in salsa, cha-cha, bachata and afro-Cuban dance.
The Ebony & Ivory Comedy Bash hosted by Kenny Robinson featured Keesha Brownie, Keith Pedro, Crystal Ferrier, Glen Foster and Arthur Simeon.
The Natrel Rink had the coolest skating party celebrating Motown’s rich history and strong contribution to the music industry with DJ D. Brown from Detroit. Complimentary hot chocolate was delicious.

The second day of Kuumba continued commemorating black history, arts and cultural events with a display entitled Black in History. It witnessed the historical footprints in time by the indigenous Black Canadian and American experience.
There were activities for children, additional short films and storytelling in the Miss Lou Room.
Vendors provided a wide variety of articles to purchase at very attractive prices.
A performance by Amadou Kienou featured song, dance and musical soundings of the Mandingue rhythms.
Natasha Waterman was amazing with her acoustic performance.
Legendary Cuban flutist Pablo Terry & Sol de Cuba had people dancing and enjoying his special music.
Beat the Street Dance Showdown was a competition among dance crews from different schools and groups. The group Adrenalyn http://vimeo.com/19791398 was judged to be the best by some of Toronto’s top media personalities.
Skaters continued to enjoy ice skating on the Natrel Rink. The weekend was jam packed with lots of interesting things to see and enjoy. Don’t miss the next one.
