2011 Toronto Urban Design Awards call for entries
The biannual City of Toronto Urban Design Awards return this year. Designers, developers, project owners, community groups, design students and others are invited to enter eligible projects no later than 4 p.m. on May 19.
Submission categories include elements, private buildings in context, public buildings in context, small open spaces, large places or neighbourhood designs, visions and master plans, and student projects.
The Toronto Urban Design Awards recognize achievements in urban design, architecture and landscape architecture. Good design creates a city that is both functional and attractive for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors alike. Celebrating excellence in urban design promotes higher standards for the built environment and quality of public places in the city.
Submissions will be adjudicated by a panel of independent design professionals, including Greg Smallenberg, Partner, Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg; Ralph Giannone, Principal, Giannone Petricone Associates Inc. Architects; Christine Abe, Principal, MBTW Watchorn; and Ronji Borooah, Town Architect and Head of Urban Design, Town of Markham.
“The Toronto Urban Design Awards is an exciting program that recognizes the important contribution made by the design and development community to the look, livability and vitality of Toronto,” said Robert Freedman, the City’s Director of Urban Design. “I’m pleased as well to encourage design students to enter theoretical or studio projects relating to Toronto.”
The City will hold an awards ceremony on September 19 to celebrate all entries and announce the winners. The 2011 ceremony is a ticketed event that will bring together, in recognition and celebration, urban designers, architects, landscape architects, planners, land developers, builders, urban policy makers, design professionals, artists and interested community members from across the Toronto region. The ceremony will include displays of all submissions, an awards presentation and a catered reception.
